You gave me four things
when you said goodbye that day,
three, with a quivering hand,
and the last, with a certainty
that night you said you loved me.
I keep them all in my quiet moments,
my back pocket,
and wonder if you remember them.
First,
the letter you wrote me
when we were two weeks apart,
but never reached me.
It was raining when
you were supposed to send it,
so you called me instead
and we talked for hours.
The paper is aged now,
the ink faded
with what could have been.
Second,
the red button
that kept falling
from your polo shirt,
it was your favorite
and became mine, too.
I stitched it back a million times,
but would come undone
when we were together.
You still wore it anyway.
Third,
the sea glass we found
just near the waves
but far on the shore,
the first time you kissed me.
I was lost at sea,
